The modern financial arena is based on a risk to
reward relationship; theoretically, the greater the risk, the greater the
reward. Whether investing in real estate, businesses or the capital markets,
the theory holds true.
This risk/return relationship has created
bipolar market segmentation. On one side are the risk-averse, major
institutions with access to seemingly endless amounts of capital -
international banks, broker-dealers, insurance companies, etc. Due to their
excess of capital, their greatest risk is to capital loss, and they resultantly
have far less interest in taking on risks to enhance their rewards. The focus
of their interest so far as investment is concerned is preservation of capital;
to do so they lower their risks. To lower their risk, these institutions
"shrink their box" with regard to investments, to the point that historically
riskier investments are not permitted. However, because of their surplus of
capital, when the money is invested, it is invested at a far more inexpensive
and discounted rate.
 On the other
side of the market segmentation are the individuals and companies striving to
grow. Risks must be taken to achieve the reward that is growth. The risk is to
capital loss. Often, these risks are too great for investment by the prudent,
risk-averse capital institutions. These companies are forced to discover and
work with non-traditional forms of capital. Due to the shortage and
unavailability of this type of capital, it is often far more expensive and
often comes with less guidance and structure.
The result is an
economic system that works only for significant, recognized corporations, with
time-honored operations, and conventional assets. This system leaves a massive
segment of the market looking to grow but with limited access to capital, and
therefore limited opportunity for growth. This "growth" segment is often left
without proper guidance or structure, where it is forced to develop at a much
slower pace, or worse, simply fall apart.
